down the long hallway
steps clack on wooden floors
knobs rattle frantically
all the doors are locked
a screen door beckons
toward a clear spring day
only to recede with each step
porcelain bowls on side tables
smash to the floor as I pass
my past looms behind me
like the sea’s constant threat
pulsing through the night
