As when the sun bends
laconically over the horizon
pulsing auras throughout
the arctic sky
before being absorbed
into the infinite night,
the thrum of fear
furs the skin
with an ecstatic edge
as a final caution
against the possibility
of death, which euphoria
contends cannot be:
happiness dulls the wary
eye to pain, allows
delusion to drape
ignorance in wide swaths
across vision’s field,
until everything seen
dissolves into tears.
