Will o’ the Wisp, or Why I Often Remain Quiet

the conversation can only move
so fast when everything’s explained
she would become impatient
leap past their next four steps
like a squirrel from branch to branch
to interpret which always upset them
they would stammer and cough dazed
they would become lost in the exposition
and want to back track to find
where they had left something out
where they could have gotten lost
but she couldn’t wait she’d continue
dancing about among the trees
they would hear her lost to them
singing songs in strange melodies
echoing the woods but not the trail
they were on shouting sometimes
out to her to come back but not with
enough concern to go find her again
