acceptance, blame, fear, poetry, ways of knowing
and the worst thing is seeing
yourself as you make the mistake
the fumbled catch the misplaced line
    and then it flashes again
    memory mauls hard
    fangs stab a cacophony
    the vowels of blame embed
    between the flow of constancy
a quick drum trill to end
    as if blood pulsed out
    into the dry thirsty earth
    with you the last witness
    such eyes dry and tired
can only wish what they see

    eros, lonely, love, poetry
    as the door snaps shut
    fingers slowly pull away
    longing to be touched

  • Say What You Will

    by

erato, language, meaning, poetry, process, social construction, storytelling
    Most secrets are unvoiced desires
    silenced through fear’s propriety,
    and snide doubt’s quibbling frost.
    I’m cold, though it’s summer
with a meadow full of flowers.
Photographs are laid on the table
as a way to organize memory
    into a digestible narrative.
    The image quickly becomes itself,
    a question unfolding like flowers,
until mirrored dreams no longer need
    us to complete their reformations;
leaving us, finally, to trust silence
will cradle us away from possibility.

  • interrupted speech

    by

    communication, control, definition, poetry
There – (obviously) somewhere  — or the marker,
even if only verbal, would be futile —
There – away from me (at least), here –
    There exists (is) –
    There is (exists) –
The second sign post on this road (this sentence)
    being Being –
    So, a place,
    or rather —
    an implied space
between here (me) and (away) there
    tied to a claim,
    (a chain)
    an assertion,
    (a word)
an act of aggression even –
    of being –
    There is –
    which begs for what
    to follow
    with an answer attached
(for mere being without context or reason causes anxiety to rise to unbearable levels since the individual cannot exist outside of the whole which is why we separate and show difference like peacocks as if it were a disease to be quarantined).
    but the what which follows
    the claim of existence
    other than here (me)
is (such certainty from the speaker)
    nothing –
    because not me
    to dally with Descartes
    Outside the window
    I view a world
    distorted by the glass
the grammar reflected in these words
    to separate (wheat from chaff?)
    me (here) from
    the actionable all

  • Redemption

    by

control, desire, erato, eros, love, poetry
The initial aspects of control relinquish
    into her first imagined kiss,
as if after a long flailing struggle
    against the rise and fall
    of the sea, exhausted,
    not able to maintain
    his strangled integrity,
    he relaxes into the wave,
    slips into the deeper pulse,
    the quieter waters,
    to drown

    within her.

  • I’ll Tell You Straight

    by

borders, erato, eros, hope, love, poetry, writing
Love is a blanket to hide beneath
to fend off any social disdain:
I thought you didn’t like me,
    she said. If I didn’t like you I wouldn’t
be here now, he said as she stapled
    another set of papers unnecessarily.
    True, she laughed not nervously
nor with any hint of the coquette.
He picked up a book casually, as
a distraction to an original phrase
she would rue the day she ever took
up with him like a toy paper spear
thrown across the room in a delicate
arc collapsing onto the snowy ground,
in as much of a manner as most
fantasies ever come to erotic conclusions.
He wonders now if Americans are killing
themselves by the millions every year
with defective rubber tires that get hot
and blow up, like his flirtatious attempts at love.

  • Eros Relents

    by

chance, desire, erato, eros, poetry, sappho
    after Sappho
    The wind tosses
                the highest apple
                            onto the ground;
    finally, within my grasp.

control, life, patriarchal, power, social construction, ways of knowing
    the familiar father
    speaks without
    words a context
    which cannot be
    shaken like chains
    breaking our arms
    and legs and tongues
    until our compliance
    becomes irrelevant
    as dust
    from our bones

acceptance, happiness, life, middle-age, poetry, ways of knowing

    I don’t have adventures planned:
no summer in Spain, nor trips
to the mountains, nor studies in Belize.
I lead a boring life of little remark:
wake into the dawn with coffee,
    and the twit-twit of cardinals
flitting from chaste tree to oak.
Only the demands of the cats
    insistently curling about my feet
disturb my day with their soft
purrs as they settle into sleep.
    Books, writing, planning meals
fill the hours with the slow comfort
    of quiet contemplation and love.

    fate, happiness, life, lost, poetry
I’m not sure when I stopped being happy
joyful moments deluded me for years
with their soft afterglow into belief
that the dark was a mere fleeting shadow
“just the other day – -remember – – the light
danced across the fresh puddles in the street”
but that well became another dry hole
    the psychedelic plunge into Dante’s
    multi-foliate heart wilted like roses
scattered dryly across the crackled ground
a constant worry coupled onto blame
and recrimination left little for now
beyond tatters to wrap myself within
as I await a final gust of wind

  • Air Shapes

    by

control, poetry, space, traces, ways of knowing
    Breathe in —
    within an allowed space:
    the air we breathe
    bends light,
    refracts,
    another vision
    shimmers.
    Belief folds
    all around all
    like air.
    Breathe out —
    with speech
    a new space,
    sounded and shaped,
    appears
    like frost in air.

  • what is left to write

    by

borders, doubt, fear, poetry, storytelling, writing
and then there are the secrets I hold
ashamed and proud they are hidden
    buried beneath decades’ sedimentation
of cliché scrawled furtively in the dark
my mind a damp cave filled with bones
memory’s savor of meat and marrow dim
my vision grown thin and luminous
faintly glowing like embers in ash
rising wisps of smoke momentarily mar
the stars’ milky path before vanishing
    into inevitable night’s bright clarity
erasing the hint I once was here

  • True and False

    by

definition, liminal, poetry, space, ways of knowing
    Outside the tree’s
    leaves whisper.
    I am here
    watching
    silence.
    The window frames us.
    Words are windows.
    Strip lies from words
    leaves silence
    in a dead mouth.

  • Explaining Nothing’s Owed of Interest Down a Rabbit Hole

    by

control, language, life, poetry, power, response

    Stein named Ezra the village
    explainer an ironically compulsive
need to compulsively explain the need
to explain compulsively yet the question
belongs to the questioner who expects
an explanation as owed though the question
gave nothing to be owed owning only
the question and the added attention demanded
of the question to explain through an answer
embedded in the question redirected through
misdirection and repetition until  the expected
    explanation is provided without interest
in a personal explanation of the question to need
to explain how not to explain compulsively
one asks the questions as a deflection from
the original guilt and shame implied obsessively
by having to explain at least a little why the
question questions the need obsessively answered
in the explanation provided for free without owing
any implied interest in the answer or question
beyond the power to hide the power in the question
by forcing the inarticulate villagers to explain
