this is where we part
which was not the line
I meant to write down
but the one I remembered
the last time you walked away

(September 12, 2026)

I wake from the night into memory.
Nearby, I am here again, a soft footstep
in the hall, muffled behind a closed door.
A silence forms like an intake of breath.
Dawn waits darkly along the horizon.
It is hard to differentiate the difference
between what I see and what I knew.
One changes the other like the rising sun.
It is as if I have lived here before,
perhaps, in a novel I once half-read,
or when lulled by repetitive motion
of an ocean wave adrift far at sea.
I’m present in overlapping visions
within each one, I’m lost and discontent.

Most of my lies
belong to me
forming a tight
enameled sarcophagus
in which I will be
remembered.
Others I have
gathered overtime
like dust bunnies
in unused front parlors
tucked softly under chairs.
Like someone else’s
discarded old clothes,
they are obvious,
and fit poorly. Over time,
I have become comfortable
with most of life’s happenstance.
Even now I pretend to know
in my silence, nodding sagely
over other’s conversations,
as if I had some wisdom
beyond circumstance,
allowing their thin opinions
to cling to me, layering
my cold emptiness
beneath wet shrouds.

an old man stumbles then
feels his way through shadows
shifting across his walls
(December 7, 2024)

I would like to say
I was just visiting
that I had somewhere else
to be where I belonged
a secret place other
than this constant vigil
I would like to say
this was a pleasant trip
that it is time to go
back home again
but none of that is true
I have no where to go
and loneliness is all
that happiness is not
(June 21, 2024)

tell me i am a story you knew
as ubiquitous as the sun
that hangs like Kali’s necklace
across your translucent skin
i am but a remnant of your dream
the splash after the rings vanish
or Muttley’s mocking sniggers
echoes within echoes within echoes
outside the sun blasts the earth
i thought safety was you
once in a lifetime
(April 29, 2024)

Over time my doubts
determine the desolation
my regrets and dreams
have brought to me.
It is not a stark moon rising
over dead mountains,
but fetid rot crumbling,
wet grain by wet grain,
into a tangled swamp
from which memory
rises unbidden
like will o’ the wisps.
Foolishly, I pursue them
lashing myself
with shame and horror
at what I did or said
in the smallest instance.
Until I am tied so tightly
to the past that I am,
that I am no longer
able to do more
than lie prostrate
across the ground,
afraid and unforgiven.
(October 31 2023)

I sit at a window sill
and watch the people below;
I have too much time to kill,
and no place really to go.
My life is a broken gun
left hidden behind a door.
I forgot where I left it,
never needing it before.
