    by

    attention, desire, hope, poetry, sonnets
    hope like desire destroys us
    stretches our attention away
from what’s left of the day
    the way smoke is pulled
from a fire through the flue
    to dissipate into the night
    this moment’s ash cascades
    as we begin to grasp
    how rarely we are here
    with each slow breath
    a thread of air uncoils
    into our smallest cells
as now and again we are
    without hope without desire

  • Speaking to You Still

    by

alone, erato, eros, lament, mythic, poetry, sonnets
    A narcissistic creature,
    I have only my voice;
    yet, think this is enough
    to pronounce some other.
    Language is not god,
    anymore than god.
I can no longer conjure you
    from conversation’s scraps:
    I speak your name again
    without an echo for reply,
    only my muddled reflection
    in which to quietly drown.
    Close by this silent pond,
    such flowers bloom now.

  • always a door

    by

    change, life, poetry
    the rhythmic throb ripples
    you along the passage
    tight flesh on flesh
    until you present
    to drown gasping air
    into a different world
    a moment as metaphor
    pulls you to the next
    always a wall always
    a hall always a door

  • love, you

    by

assignment, conversation, erato, love, poetry, response, ways of knowing
    there is no again
    to imply
    an abatement
    love to be love
    is without time
    no before or after
    or even a now
    it simply is
    overtime
    without measure
    within me
    within you
    love breathes
    like the universe

  • Love’s End

    by

change, erato, humility, liminal, love, poetry, transition, ways of knowing
    he was a rabbit
    ready to run
    caught still in the grass
    he was trapped
    trapped in his knowing
    trapped in his not knowing
    he wanted something other
    than a future regret
    something other than this
    memory’s remnants
    possibility’s bloody scraps
    unfit even for motley

  • flow

    by

attention, change, fate, life, poetry, time
“..the true name of eternity is Today.”
                –Philo
    through yet another door
    into yet another field
    flowers flow around you
like a stream around a rock
yet it is you that moves
    through yet another door
    into yet another field
    each moment each step
    brings you yet again
to yet another door to open
    to let time flow through
carrying you along like a bee
    dancing from flower to flower
from field to field until all
that you ever were has vanished
and all the doors snap shut
without so much as a sigh
    to mark your passage there
    you fool yourself to think
as do we all each day
that you are rock not water
that you have time to change
that you have time as if time
can be held close can be
    saved for yet another time
can be more than the sliver
between the then and when or
even can be at all no more
    than yet another step
    into yet another stream
    through yet another door
    into yet another field
    full of flowers blooming again

  • cloud formations

    by

abstract, definition, identity formation, lament, paradigms, poetry, sonnets
    angels walk masked and hooded
    through the city streets searching
for a place where they can breathe
    like clouds love’s sadness moves
and shifts shapes across a silent sky
until lost in our thoughts and desire
    we’re trapped within self-mockery
what we think we do grows vague
    within an undeserved righteousness
so we build a prison from our hearts
stripping sinews for chains which pulse
a form of love loose fitting yet safe
as if time and frightened patience
were enough to redeem the day

  • eros as constant

    by

    abstract, eros, liminal, poetry, sonnets
    always a longing
    it seems waits
    to project upon
    the other without
    hope to believe
    it will unfold
    like rose petals
    along this path
    the object of desire
    never exists
    as fulfillment
    but the moment
    before a bud
    opens into a rose

  • a constant

    by

abstract, hope, language, meaning, obsessions, poetry, sonnets
the embedded fear this language will fail
    will disconnect from memory’s trauma
troubles the thoughts I daily swim within
like a leaf caught in an eddy’s dark swirl
each slurred word drops in its wake detritus
    which echo into ever widening
circles like destroyers sending out blips
to find the submerged truth lurking below
how can one expect meaning to form out
of such sounds as these brief guttural cries
as if hands could be quick enough to grab
the sibilant darting of a snake’s tongue
yet still I write into the rising dark
as if somehow it will carry me home

  • peripheral

    by

    lament, liminal, poetry, sonnets
    a slow meander away
    a side shuffle
    a step aside
    head askew
    eyes cast up
    then quickly down
    soft- soft- listen
    more occurs between
    what’s said than said
    reticence means more
    than mere acquiescence
    to which ever god’s present
    here along these margins
    crows circle in lamentation

change, dance, liminal, moon series, poetry, ritual, transition
    the procreant surge
    dances with the moon’s shadow
    beneath the new grass

  • what we say we see

    by

change, interpretation, meaning, poetry, sonnets, ways of knowing
    Each time a tale’s told,
    living memory
    stumbles toward death;
    we interpret all
    we know for ourselves
    through myopic eyes;
    hold close all that’s dear
    to ward off change;
    while change transforms
    what we know as true
like light on a lake shimmers
    the mountain’s reflection.
    Beyond entropy nothing is static;
    stories change and we change.

  • happiness takes courage

    by

dance, doubt, fate, fear, happiness, poetry
    I know I should roll
    and be happy within
    the stumble bumble
    of talk and step
    to enjoy the fool
    I have become
    yet I know I will
    turn and struggle
    stand still and listen
    to the niggling voices
    which lick and whisper
    beneath doubt’s laughter
too easy to say what should
    as fear stifles what would

  • proximity’s not necessary

    by

abstract, fragments, interrelationships, language, memory, narrative, poetry, traces, writing
    decaying parchment
    scattered on the floor
    within fragment’s hints
    whisper a mind held
    still in a brush stroke’s
    partial rendering
    signs retained in ink
    no need to hang on
    every word we hear
    memory’s beyond
    the living fossil
    inherent in us
    memory’s no more
    true than our desire
    to shape past’s beliefs
    to fit our present
    like light in shadows
    through diaphanous
    curtains at sunrise
    her soft breath lingers
    at your tone deaf ear
     a line vanishes
    before it’s written

  • dream journal #29: the other

    by

desire, dream, erato, eros, life, love, poetry
    in his wayward and whimsical
    wandering he watched
    her approach and wondered
    up to the moment
    and then again
    beyond the moment
    on into the next
    who she was
    who was she
    as she met him
    and met him again
    with a kiss
    who was she
    who she was
    and then again
    and then again
    with a kiss
    who was she
    who she was
    with a kiss
    until they were old
    without knowing
    they were old
    together
